Estovia

A nation beset by many enemies, Estovia is a bastion of honor and justice on a continent dominated by the power of wealth. Set between great mountains, a vast desert, and the unspeakable horrors of the Dread Moor, Estovia is a nation almost cut off from the rest of the Wyrld fighting to keep its ideals and citizens alive.

Capital

The capital city of Falcos large and well-defended. Many concentric walls protect the city, and at its heart lies the Citadel. This mammoth structure of stone is considered the finest fortification in the Wyrld. Constructed over ninety years, its thick walls and many defenses promise to be impregnable should an enemy ever push to its walls.

The rest of the city is fairly typical for its size, being divided into quarters, each with its protective walls and manned gates.

Social Structure

The society of Estovia is a strange combination of rugged individualism mixed with communalism. Long years of armed conflict against completely foreign enemies, namely the mages of Thule and the undead of the Dread Moor, has engrained a deep comraderee into the citizens of this nation.

An abiding patriotism that there nation is the best place to live abides deep in the heart of most Estovians, in spite of the constant border skirmishes. Though usually laconic, most Estovians are happy to talk about the accomplishments and beauty of their nation, severe beauty though it may be.

The common people of this land are disturbed very little by the constant battles along the borders, except for the raised tax level necessary to support the knighthood and its military operations.

Political Structure

Politics in this nation is closely linked to the goals of the Estovian Knighthood. Though the knights do not technically have any governmental power, their role as the daily defenders of the country from its many enemies gives them a plenipotentiary power rarely enjoyed by totalitarian dictators in other nations. In former times it has happened that the king was in fact a member of the knighthood, though this is not currently the case.

The firstborn male son of the king is the crown prince. In cases without such a successor the crown falls upon the closest related male, usually a brother.

Though the king has rite of law over all people and all things within his borders the state of affairs in the nation has prevented any overly despotic kings for lasting longer than a year on the throne. Nowadays it is common for the crown prince to be tutored almost exclusively by the Estovian Knighthood.

Decisions are currently made at a high council composed of the king himself, several Knights of the Scroll, and a few other personal advisors to the king.

Religion

Estovia has a strict and well developed pantheon of deities that oversee it. Though gods of battle and safety are held in highest regard there also exist deities who influence the day to day affairs of the nation and its people.

The most notable deities include:

Economics

Being set apart from the other nations of Darisa, most trade proceeds overland through the narrow neck between the Encroaching Desert and the Hoord Mountains. From there it usually proceeds north into Pelosia and onto the High Road unless events are particularly volatile at that time.

Estovia is not a merchant nation for the most part, but does import and export many things. Extensive mines in the Hoord mountains and massive foundries in Falcos allow the nation to export many metal items of all sorts. Wood is also plentiful in Estovia and rare woods are sometimes taken north to Pelosia and east.

Estovia's main import is fabrics of all sorts. It is mildly amusing to note that many of the finest fabrics the nation imports come from Thule via Elloria.

Estovia mints many different coins. The most valuable is a silver Eagle, worth about half of a Shurran. Slightly larger than the Eagle, a Shield is a copper coin worth a fifth of an eagle. These coins bear the seal of Estovia on one side, and their namesake on the other. These hexagonal coins have a round inset and are difficult to shave without making it apparent. In addition, the punishments for such crimes are very severe, discouraging people from making the attempt.
