Riamahn

An island nation far to the north, Riamahn is isolated culturally and physically from the rest of Darisia. Although Riemen, as natives of this land are called, do engage in trade with other nations they show a surprisingly small desire to travel or visit other lands. This, combined with the laconic nature of these people, lends a certain mysterious aura to an otherwise out of the way nation.

Capital

Riamahn is the largest and first city in this nation as well as the seat of government for the nation. The city is sectioned and very well fortified, with high walls and great gates, in addition to a large navy.

Most of the trade with foreign nations takes place from this deep water port, and this is the only place that foreign ships are allowed to dock on the Kingdom of the Isle. The capital city is the only place that many foreigners ever visit, in fact many never make it past the dock quarter. This sometimes gives the impression that every Rieman is a warrior ready to defend his country,a a rumor that they do little to dissuade.

Social Structure

Most Riemen are farmers or shepherds, although a significant fraction of the population does live in Riamahn and the other three small cities, or caers. A significant mining population also exists, as the Isle is honeycombed with a complex cave structure.

In general Riemen tend to use fewer words than people of other countries, and have a tendecy towards deliberation before action, although they have an instinctual contempt for beaurocracy. Riamahn also has a surprisingly liberal culture, having few gender barriers to rank or position. Women without children or who's children are grown rise to high position as often as men.

Political Structure

The government of this nation rules very loosely, but is powerful and has the backing of the people. Taxes are low as the nation generates most of its income by taxing foreign trade and by exporting precious materials. Each caer is ruled by a warder, for a total of four in all, in addition to a high warder who is responsible for the country as a whole. These warders hold the nation in trust for the day when their true king will return, a subject of which even most Riemen have little knowledge, and even less desire to talk.

Religion

Religion in the Kingdom of the Isle is a strange thing. The father in each household usually says a few words over breakfast on the first day of each week, thanking the powers that be for the life they have and the Wyrld they live in, but little if any mention is made beyond this. In particular no mention is made of who or what those powers might be.

In direct contrast to this, the central citadel in Riamahn, Lenor Keep, has a massive temple within its confines, although the temple is in an out of the way part of the castle complex and lies unused.

Economics

Although Riamahn provides for most of its own necessities it nevertheless has very important trade relations with other nations. Gemstones pulled from its mines support the government and a never ending project to expand and improve the fortifications of this nation, and a brisk trade with the Vaelsh for dressed stone passes across the Bight of Niedi.

Riamahn also sends much lumber and pitch south to the shipyards in Shurrah, and in return buys many ships for its traders and navy, whose total size is not well known.

The coins in Riamahn are all silver and precisely minted. Knurled edges, an inset face, and pressed emblems instead of raised make this currency one of the most difficult to shave or otherwise deface for profit. The largest coin is called the Medallion and is worth approximately two Shurrans. The Galleon is worth half a Medallion, with a Shevva worth one tenth of that.
